If you’ve been following us for a while you’ll remember that every year we pack up the car and drive up to Muskoka to spend a few nights at the JW Marriott with each other and our friends. Its kind of this unspoken tradition, this thing we just sort of do, but after so many years I think I will actually call it just that.
Almost every year that we’ve been up there I’ve either been pregnant or toting around a diapered baby and this summer was no different with Henrik in tow. It really is the perfect get-away, though the area has become less of a hidden gem and more busy. Its still nice to get out to the lake, enjoy a few nights at a hotel where someone else does all the cleaning and most of the cooking. I say “most” because we do bring up food for us to make breakfast in the morning. The boys eat so little and cannot wait to get to the pool that it doesn’t make sense to buy their breakfast. So we use the kitchenette in our room to toast bagels and pour some cereal. Michael will usually head down to the cafe to grab us two giant sized cup-a-jo’s and we enjoy the breakfast chaos in the confines of our own room…plus its way cheaper this way too.
Sharing this trip with our friends Nicole and Joey and their two boys, is definitely one of the highlights of the summer and our boys have all formed these cute little friendships that seem to evolve as they get older. They get so excited to travel up there together and Johannes talks non-stop about all the things that him and Ben will do together. From fishing to marshmallow roasting, its all an adventure to them.
We didn’t really know what to expect with us sharing a room for the trip or from Henrik who was still in the middle of a major four month sleep regression, but it all worked out. We brought our own travel crib and sound machine and Henrik and the boys slept better in the hotel room shared with everyone than they do at home. I’m sure the fresh air helped too but it did remind me that I need to invest in better black out curtains…so I’m on the hunt for those tomorrow.
Since I’m on the topic of bringing Henrik along I wanted to mention that we brought along our Bugaboo Donkey stroller. I’ve had lots of questions about it on Instagram and here so here is my take on it. The Donkey is awesome. Its light and easy to bring along for the ride. I used both the seat and the carseat with the adapter interchangeably depending on the time of day. Henrik had several of his naps in the stroller with the sun canopy down and we were able to enjoy the beach, the dock and the restaurants with him right beside us. Though Magnus had no interest in sitting in the stroller this trip we used the side shopping bag a lot to store our sun screen and our hats etc… Its by far the best and most useful stroller we’ve ever had and Henrik really loves it too.
At the end of our stay I couldn’t leave before booking next year’s vacation and this time we’ll go for four nights instead of three. Three days just never seem to be quite long enough.
