For a while leading up to Henrik’s birth I debated ways the boys could all meet him. I knew they would be staying at my mom and dad’s while we were in the hospital so originally we wanted to have my parents bring them both together after their naps. We were even thinking we’d have them be a part of our first photo session with Nicole.
But then the day came and both Johannes and Magnus had their individual sport activities in the morning which ended at different times and I sort of changed my mind at the last minute. I realized pretty quickly that if both brothers came at the same time with my parents it might be a bit overwhelming for them, plus what if they both wanted to hold the baby! They fight over fire trucks and Paw Patrol toys so I was sure they would fight over their little brother too.
In the end I asked my parents to each swing by the hospital on their way back from either swimming or basketball that way everyone would get some alone time with me and the baby and we could leave the fighting for when we went home.
This did mean that we didn’t get our hospital “family of five” photo, but that’s ok because I think the bonding time each sibling got individually was much more important than the photo op. Magnus especially was on cloud 9. He wanted to be right beside me when I fed his brother, asked a lot of questions and finally decided that he liked Henrik because he was “so soft”!
I think what surprised me most of all is that every scary thought that crossed my mind about that initial first meeting, never materialized. There have been growing pains since we’ve come home, and I will write more about those another time, but not once have any of the boys asked me to take the baby back or been jealous of their little brother. They’ve only had love, affection and lots of kisses for the little guy.
