Magnus will absolutely not touch a single vegetable and rarely eats fruits, though I’ve worked up to him eating grapes, apples and blackberries, so I do think there is hope for him. But right now he mostly wants bread, cereal, pasta and crackers. It is seriously stressing this mama out, especially because Johannes is such a great eater.
We introduced food to them as babies exactly the same way and in the same exact order. So I can only attribute Magnus’ picky eating to his stubborn streak. Whereas Johannes would at least try a food before he decided he didn’t like it, Magnus will not try anything. Now we have tried it all let me tell you, and we even went as far as to hire a Occupational Therapist who specialized in food issues…and though we’ve made a little progress, I still worry that Magnus isn’t getting enough nutrients and vitamins.
So that is how I started making smoothies for him, and for the rest of us because smoothies are delicious! My favourite is a blueberry banana smoothie that we make quite a bit, including Sunday when we came back from a run. Its an easy way to get protein and fiber into their little bodies quick, and for anyone who would want a protein shake instead, its pretty easy to add 1 scoop of your favourite protein mix into it.
The boys LOVE it!
Ingredients (to make 4 servings)
1 cup frozen blueberries (I love the wild organic blueberries myself because they have more flavour)
1 frozen banana
1 cup orange juice
1 cup almond milk
1 cup water
1 tbsp almond butter
2 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp hemp seeds
2 large tbsp greek yogurt
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp maple syrup
Blend all ingredients until smooth. If you prefer it to be more liquid add a little more water or almond milk. Taste it to make sure its to your liking. I don’t like the smoothies to be super sweet, but if you or your kids do simply add a little more syrup. Enjoy!
