This weekend the boys wanted to see the nursery progress and had a million questions about their new brother. Johannes especially is so excited for a new baby that he had us “practice” taking care of the newbie with the unicorn stuffie in the crib. He wanted to rock the “baby”, dress the “baby”, put the “baby” in the car seat and pretend to take him for a walk. It was pretty cute.
We realized right away when we found out we were pregnant with baby three, that our clunker of a car seat from 2010 was completely expired and we’d have to buy a new car seat (along with many many other things). So I got to researching.
I had three major must haves for my new car seat: safety (of course), light weight (because after carrying the worlds heaviest car seat around with the world’s heaviest babies for as long as I did, I learned a thing or two), and easy washing fabric covers (there will be barf and poop, there will I promise you). I looked at three different seats and ultimately settled on the Maxi Cosi Mico Max 30 because it met all three of my main requirements.
First off its incredibly safe and will hold my big babies until they’re 30lbs and – or 32″ tall. The car seat also has Air Protect™ superior side impact protection to protect head, and after our scary car accident last year, I don’t diminish safety in the least.
Second, the Mico Max 30 is light, ultra light! 8.2lbs (excluding the base) but this is important once the babies are bigger than 10lbs, which in our case is usually the day we leave the hospital. Both our boys were 9.5lbs at birth, and they had gained it all back by the time we left the hospital, add that to a 10+ lbs car seat and it made it so so hard to carry them past the first month. So a light and easy to carry car seat was a MUST for us this time, especially knowing I’ll be carrying baby in one hand, back packs on my back and holding kid hands with my free hand.
Last but not least taking the car seat fabric off and putting it back on needed to be easy. Our babies barf, I’m pretty sure all babies barf, but nothing sends chills down my spine more than when I’m driving along and hear the belch followed by a streaming river exiting my baby in the car seat behind me. I know exactly what will await me when I stop and check on him, and I know that if I don’t wash the car seat fabric immediately it will start to smell like rotten cheese quicker than I can blink. Our last car seat was horribly hard to disassemble for washes and then putting it all back on was another story. So one thing I loved about the Maxi Cosi Mico Max 30 is that the seat pad is machine washable, dryer safe and easy to remove and install without having to re-thread the harness. Yessss!!!
I think next weekend I’ll install the base and take it for a test run…10 weeks to go you guys! 10 weeks to go.
